Why do I need a defibrillator cabinet?

Why do I need a defibrillator cabinet?

In order for an AED (defibrillator) to be of value, it needs to be available for use at all times. Having a dedicated defib cabinet in a central location that everyone knows about can save time and potentially a life. With many AEDs now being fully automatic, they can be put to effective use by virtually anyone and are not restricted only to those with training.

Our range of cabinets are highly visible, clearly marked and sturdily constructed. They come with a variety of features including access alarms, heating and LED visibility lighting. Having a centrally located defib cabinet saves the need for passing the AED between responsible persons and ensures it is available at all times to all people in the vicinity.

Indoor vs Outdoor Cabinets

Indoor vs Outdoor Cabinets

Most defibrillator cabinets are designed for indoor installation only. Where the AED will be kept most of the time is important since keeping them above a minimum temperature is vital to their correct and effective operation should the need to use them arise. If you do need to store your AED outdoors, it is essential that is heated as well as being rated for protection against water and dust ingress.

Heated cabinets require an electricity supply and it is recommended that the installation is carried out by a qualified electrician to ensure that safety is maintained for all potential users of the device. UV protection built into the vision panel of your cabinet is also a good idea if your outdoor location is liable to be exposed to strong sunlight.

For areas, where a defibrillator is to be positioned near a coastal location, our recommendation would be a stainless steel cabinet (available on request). A stainless steel cabinet provides additional protection where harsher conditions are going to be commonplace, whilst remaining accessible and easily recognisable.

Access Alarms

Access Alarms

There is no such thing as a cheap defibrillator and this makes them a potential target for theft. The majority of AED cabinets in our range offer the option for an access alarm and many come fitted as standard. These alarms are loud enough to alert all persons in the vicinity to the opening of the cabinet, thereby minimising the likelihood of unauthorised access or removal of the AED.

Most alarms are powered by a standard sized battery that only needs replacing on an infrequent basis. Simply add the checking of the alarm and its battery to your routine visual inspection of the defibrillator to ensure it continues to work as intended.
