Defibrillators for Schools
The government’s statutory guidance on supporting children with medical conditions advises that educational establishments should purchase a defibrillator (AED) as part of their duty of care to protect pupils with particular healthcare needs.
It is important though to be aware that sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can affect anyone at any time, and does not require a pre-existing health condition to strike. The importance of having a defibrillator nearby if a pupil or staff member should suffer sudden cardiac arrest cannot be overstated.
Fully automatic defibs are often a wise choice for school environments as automated defibrillators are by far the easiest to deploy. Studies have shown that students and pupils as young as 11 are able to safely and successfully deliver treatment via an AED if called upon to do so.
The defibrillators highlighted in this section each offer attributes that make them especially well suited for use within schools. These features include drop-resistance, dual adult/paediatric function and extended warranty periods. Only you know what is right for your school, but these three AEDs are an excellent place to start the search for a defib that will meet your needs.
