Semi-Automatic AED / Defib

A semi-automatic defib unit requires the rescuer to press a button to deliver a shock. The AED provides constant guidance to the user but is better suited to those who have received some training, though a semi-automatic defib can still be used by laypersons in an emergency. Sinoatrial Node

The sinoatrial node is the hearts natural pacemaker. A group of tissues found in the right atrium of the heart, the tissues send an electrical impulse through the heart to generate the hearts beat. Also see pacemaker.

Sinus Rhythm

A medical term to describe the normal beating of the heart i.e. a normal heart beat.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest

The sudden inability of the heart to contract effectively causing blood to stop circulating around the body, treatable with CPR and defibrillation. If untreated often leads to death. Also see cardiac arrest.

Sudden Cardiac Death

Result of sudden, untreatable cardiac arrest. See also sudden cardiac arrest.
