What are training manikins?

What are training manikins?

Training manikins are life like torsos specifically designed to aid in the training of first aid, primarily CPR techniques. Proper CPR technique can significantly increase a patient’s chances of survival. The best way to learn CPR, obstructed airway checks, mouth-to-mouth ventilation, and chest compressions is to practice on a lifelike training manikin under the guidance of a competent instructor.

Modern manikins include a range of features to minimise the need for multiple training aids to conduct comprehensive training such as blocked airways, inflatable lungs to simulate the rise and fall of a patient’s chest when administering rescue breaths, and realistic tactile feedback to demonstrate correct force and depth of chest compressions. Some take this even further with advanced feedback systems such as the LED illumination patterns on a Brayden CPR manikin or Laerdal’s QCPR technology which allows real-time statistics and post-training improvement recommendations for individual students.

Most manikins include user-replaceable parts, with spares available for purchase separately, like face masks and airways to help ensure safe, hygienic training of multiple students while also improving the usable lifetime of the manikin. Many manikins also include carry bags, training mats, wipes, or other accessories.

QCPR Technology

QCPR Technology

Further enhancing Laerdal’s best training manikins, QCPR technology has been added to the Little Anne, Little Junior, and Little Baby models to provide real-time feedback on chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth ventilations as well as individual post-training improvement recommendations.

Features available with QCPR include:

  • Real-time feedback on compressions and ventilations
  • Post-training analysis detailing scores and tips for improvement
  • In depth information on compression release, depth and rate, and ventilation volume
  • Displays number of compressions, ventilations and cycles

By combining the QCPR statistics and recommendations with their own observations, experience, and insight, instructors can make their training sessions personal and engaging for all students, coaching each student individually to ensure they succeed and gain the confidence necessary to face a real emergency.

Instructors can use one of two apps to monitor classes depending on the number of manikins in use, or the SkillGuide devices (available separately) if no compatible tablet is available, while students can see their own real-time performance if they have a compatible smartphone to use the apps.
